American; in Nicaragua 1977-79
“My father was in the U.S. Army, so we lived in Panama, Argentina, Bolivia. In Nicaragua, he was attached to the U.S. embassy working with the Nicaraguan military. I have some weird memories. Like I have this very vivid memory of going to eat one time at this restaurant overlooking the lake that was one of my family’s favorite places; they had the best steak with salsa jalapeña. We were eating dinner and we were the only people there. Then—I don’t know if it was by design or it just happened—but like 30 guys in fatigues walk in and surround the restaurant, and [this man] shows up and he and my dad do, you know, a big abrazo. And I'm like, ‘Who’s that?’ And it's like, ‘Oh, that's Tachito, that’s the president's son.’ And it was normal, but it was definitely like, Huh, this is interesting.”
